Stein Werewolf class 1 climbing chainsaw boots (no steel toe cap), available now!

Stein Werewolf bootsIn 2010 STEIN engaged in the process of designing a protective boot aimed specifically for the climbing arborist, which offered full chainsaw protection but without the size, weight, and bulk associated with chainsaw footwear. This industry first is the only CE-certified chainsaw boot (EN17249:04), which has no toe cap, thereby reducing both the weight and bulk normally associated with chainsaw footwear.

A new thinking towards chainsaw protective boots

In 2010, STEIN engaged in the process of designing a protective boot aimed specifically for the climbing arborist, which offered full chainsaw protection but without the size, weight, and bulk normally associated with chainsaw footwear. During the design process issues with regards to the safety standard EN17249:04 arose, which was originally written to cover forestry footwear.

As a member of SATRA, the UK’s leading authority on Footwear Certification, STEIN requested for SATRA to submit a `Recommendation for Use (RfU) sheet’ to the committee of all Notified Bodies to discuss the EN Directive EN17249:04 and re-examine it to accommodate climbers.

The standard required all forestry footwear to include a safety toe cap. This item alone added enormous size, weight, and bulk to the boot. On 9th June 2011 the VG10 group considered if it would be acceptable to issue an EC type-examination certificate for a chainsaw cut-resistant boot that does not include a safety toe cap, and whether such a product meets EC Directive 89/686 Annex II – ‘Basic Health & Safety Requirements’. They jointly agreed, with certain restrictions particularly in relation to cut resistance properties being maintained over the toe area along with various other points to address during testing.

With clarification in place by the Notified Bodies the Werewolf project proceeded. On the 19th March 2014, some 4 years after the original concept was discussed, an EC Type-Examination Certificate was issued by SATRA which allows STEIN to manufacture and sell the first ever purpose built chainsaw protective arborist climbing boot excluding a toecap carrying the CE Mark.
